The Thailand Nursing Honor Society was initiated to enhance the nursing and midwifery professional development and create opportunity for nurses in Thailand to networking with the nurse leaders and nursing students worldwide. In Thailand, a couple attempts were made to establish the Thailand Nursing honor society and member induction. However, dean consortium and nursing school leaders agreed that there should be one nursing honor society in Thailand. For that reason, the process was discontinued.
Until November of 2009, Thailand Nursing Council leaded by Emerita Professor Dr. Wichit Srisuphan, was contacted by the vice president of the Sigma Theta Tau International regarding the STTI chapter establishment in Thailand. After carefully reviewed by the committees, Thailand Nursing council agreed to host and supports the honor society establishment and assigned Professor Dr. Wipada Kunaviktikul to collaborate with the STTI. On November 11th, 2010, the executive and Thailand nursing scholars met with Professor Dr. Karen H. Morin, STTI president and Dr. K. Joanne McGlown Director, Global Business, STTI to consult for STTI Thailand at large chapter establishment. With the nursing council president as the consultant, the Nursing Honor Society establishment steering board committees were appointed. This committee consisted of the head of dean consortium, several nursing school deans and respectable nursing scholars.
On April 7, 2011, the establishment steering board committee met again and agreed to launch the “Thailand Nursing Honor Society at-Large” with the support from Thailand Nursing Council at the beginning. The first induction is held on May 25th, 2011. Once the Thailand Nursing Honor Society continues to host scholarly activities and maintains members for one year, the honor society will request to become a Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society Chapter at Large. The honor society members will then be invited to become a member of STTI.
