The Beginning of the Project Development
In the early 2000, Associate Professor Dr. Kobkul Phancharoenworakul, who was at the time the dean of the Faculty of Nursing (during 1999-
2007), initiated the reconstruction project of the Phra Sri Nagarindra Building to replace the old building that had been used more than 20 years. To raise fund for the project, some activities were held, such as creating and selling images of Buddha Chao Fa Siriraj and Phra Buddhacharn Toh Phromarangsi. Upon seeing advertisement of the project from the television, His Majesty the King graciously has Lord Chamberlain,His Excellency Mr. Kaewkwan Vajarodaya, contacted the Dean of Faculty of Nursing and conferred the message of his benevolence.
Lord Chamberlain recommended that both Phra Sri Nagarindra and Mahidol Adulyadej Buildings should be rebuilt. The Faculty of Nursing therefore prepared the details of the construction projects and presented them to His Majesty. On November 14, 2002, His Majesty approved the projects and graciously donated 448,755,500.00 Baht for the construction from Somdet Phra Si Account, Bureau of the Royal Household.

The Audience with HRH Princess Kalyani Vadhana, the Princess of Naradhiwas

Since the construction of high-rise buildings on the riverside may disturb the scenery of Siriraj Hospital, the preliminary drawings of the Mahidol Adulyadej and the Phra Sri Nagarindra buildings were modified and reconfigured to combine them into one of 15 floors in height, and was presented to HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana, the Princess of Naradhiwas on June 20, 2003. HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana had additional recommendation. After that, two alternative preliminary drawings were developed by the architect and the Faculty of Nursing presented them to HRH Princess for her recommendations, together with naming the buildings with the names of Prince Mahidol and the Princess Mother which are “Mahidol Adulyadej-Phra Sri Nagarindra Building”. The princess preferred the second alternative, which looked better ventilation. However, it was later found that a regulation issued by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration prohibited the construction or modification of certain types of riverside buildings and therefore the project site had to be relocated to the Salaya Campus of Mahidol University.

The Mahidol Adulyadej-Phra Sri Nagarindra Building at Salaya Campus
On September 21, 2004, Mahidol University approved the construction of the Mahidol Adulyadej-Phra Sri Nagarindra Building in the south- eastern zone of its Salaya Campus, where the Radio Broadcasting Station of the Public Relation Department was located.  The Faculty of Nursing, thus, spent more than 3 years for coordinating with the department for the relocation of the station, which was completed in February 2008.

The Gracious Support from His Majesty the King
Later, on November 25, 2008, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously accepted the invitation to the foundation stone laying ceremony. Then, on January 28, 2009, the Faculty of Nursing was informed by the Bureau of the Royal Household that His Majesty kindly increased his donation for the project to 613,258,900 baht. The Faculty of Nursing truly owes its progress and success to His Majesty’s kind support.

Permission from the Cabinet to Construct Mahidol Adulyadej – Phra Sri Nagarindra as a Special Case

An important problem occurred in this phase was that the ministerial regulations issued by the Ministry of Interior in 2006 stating the area of no construction, modification or change of any kind, or any type of buildings in some areas of Phutthamonthon and Samphran Districts, Nakhon Pathom Province. The main message of the regulations is prohibition of the building with height over 18 m, and with space over 1000 sq. m. Since Mahidol Adulyadej - Phra Si Nagarindra Building unfortunately located in the stated area, the Faculty of Nursing, consequently, had to ask for an exemption from the cabinet according to the ministerial regulations on exemption, indulgence, and condition determination, 2007.

Associate Professor Dr. Fongcum Tilokskulchai, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing (during 2007–2015) has put strong effort to request for special permission from the cabinet through the assistance of Mahidol University and Ministry of Education. Eventually, the cabinet comes to a decision on January 19, 2010, that “Allow Mahidol University to construct Mahidol Adulyadej - Phra Si Nagarindra Building for a special case according to the issue presented by Ministry of Education.”

April 6, 2010 Italian – Thai Development Public Company Limited, who was appointed to construct the building, started the first piling. May 23, 2012 The construction of the building was successfully complete, with the construction period of 2 years, 2 months and 9 days.
