As of the urge of the report from the global independent commission: Education of Health Professionals for the 21stCentury titled ‘Health professionals for a new century: Transforming education to strengthen health systems in an interdependent world’, calls for a move from informative to formative to transformative education. These have been creating the challenges and opportunities available to the nursing profession and academic institutions responsible in preparing for future nurses to the realities of their population health, health care system, and workforce needs.

To tackle these emerging challenges, transformative learning in nursing education becomes an important key concept in a development strategy. The concept of Transformative learning consists of three levels of learning achievements – informative, formative, and transformative.  The informative learning is about providing knowledge to develop skills in order to produce an expert. The formative learning builds socialization and values in order to produce professionals. Transformative learning develops leadership attributes for producing social change agents. Therefore, transformative learning in nursing education is essential for developing the nurse professional leadership who are equipped with all competencies addressed prior to graduation which are relevant to 21st century population health and workforce needs.

To respond to these challenges, Faculty of Nursing, Mahidol University, as the first nursing school in Thailand, are proud to take this opportunity to initiate the platform for the First Asian Congress in Nursing Education (ACiNE) in order to discuss the educational challenges, highlighting on transformative nursing education ideas, information and expertise, to develop the joint networking among the First/Leader of nursing schools to prepare  nurse graduates  for 21st century nursing workforce, and to be the “Nursing Education HUB” of academic development and advance for nursing and midwifery education and practice throughout the region.
