Department of Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing Strengthens Faculty Capacity in Preparation for Graduate Program Launch in 2027

The Department of Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, Faculty of Nursing, Mahidol University, is actively advancing the capacity of its nursing faculty in mental health to support the planned launch of a graduate-level academic program in 2027. This effort aligns with the ongoing enhancement of the undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing Science Program, ensuring it remains responsive to the evolving societal landscape—particularly the escalating behavioral and mental health challenges stemming from substance abuse.

Given the increasingly severe impact of drug use on patients’ mental and behavioral health, the Department recognizes the critical importance of equipping faculty with skills in Motivational Interviewing for Addiction—a key intervention strategy in mental health care. To address this need, the Department organized a hands-on workshop titled “Motivational Interview for Addiction” on 17–18 June and 2 July 2025, from 09:00–16:00 hrs, held at Room 303, Faculty of Nursing, Salaya Campus.

The training was honored by the presence of Associate Professor Dr. Pattarajit Jumphon-Gosselin, Head of the Department of Society and Health, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Mahidol University, who presided over the opening ceremony. The workshop was led by Assistant Professor Dr. Darunee Phukhao, an expert in behavior change communication, who provided in-depth knowledge and practical training to participants.

This initiative marks an important step in advancing the professional capacity of faculty in the field of mental health nursing. Beyond enhancing individual competencies, the workshop also served as an academic platform fostering knowledge exchange between the Department of Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, Faculty of Nursing, and the Department of Society and Health, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. This collaboration is expected to lay a strong and sustainable foundation for long-term academic cooperation between the two faculties.
